English: One of Korea's unique honorific rules, when there is a person of higher rank between the speaker and the listener, the honorific of the subject is lowered based on the higher-ranked person. It is widely used in the workplace but is gradually disappearing from daily life.

압존법 (壓尊法) 이란? What is Apjonbeop?

압존법이란, 듣는 이(listener)가 말하는 이(speaker)보다 높고, 말하는 이가 어떤 대상을 이야기할 때 그 대상이 듣는 이보다 낮을 경우, 대상을 높이지 않고 낮추어 말하는 한국어의 독특한 존대법칙이다.

English: Apjonbeop (壓尊法) is a unique Korean honorific rule where, if the listener is higher than the speaker, and the person being spoken about is lower than the listener, the speaker lowers the rank/honorific used for the person being spoken about, rather than raising it.

즉, 사장님(듣는 이)께 강미녀 대리님(대상)에 대해 말할 때, 사장님이 강미녀 대리님보다 높으므로 강미녀 대리님을 높여 부르지 않는 것.

English: That is, when speaking *to* the boss (listener) *about* Assistant Manager Kang Mi-nyeo (the subject), you do not use high honorifics for Assistant Manager Kang Mi-nyeo because the boss is higher than her.
