Grace와 Mike는 한국 회사에 입사 전에 이미 한국어능력시험(TOPIK) 4급을 획득했다. 일상생활과 제한된 업무 분야에서의 의사소통은 무리없는 실력. 그러나 실제 한국 회사에서 일을 하다보면 상황과 맥락에서 다양하게 쓰이는 단어들을 어렵게 느낀다고 한다.

However, they find it challenging to understand the various meanings of words used in different contexts and situations in a real Korean workplace.
동료와의 생활에서 들을 수 있는 쉬운 단어부터 소개한다.
1. 월급루팡 "Salary Lupin/thief"
"철수씨는 은근히 외출이 잦아, 월급루팡인가?"
"Cheol-su seems to go out quite often; I wonder if he's a 'salary thief'?"
'월급루팡' 은 프랑스 소설 속 괴도 '아르센 루팡'에서 유래된 신조어로, 회사에서 마땅히 해야 할 일을 제대로 하지 않으면서 월급만 축내는 직원을 비꼬는 말이다. 마치 루팡이 남의 물건을 훔쳐 가듯, 자신의 노동력을 제공하지 않고 월급만 받아 가는 행태를 빗댄 표현. 의외로 입으로만 일하면서 일하는 척 하는 사람도 많다는 점을 잊지 말자.
"Salary Lupin" is a neologism derived from the French novel character Arsène Lupin, a gentleman thief. It refers to employees who don't properly perform their duties while still receiving their salary. Just like Lupin steals others' belongings, these individuals are seen as taking their salary without providing their due labor. It's worth noting that there are surprisingly many people who only pretend to work by talking a big game.
따라서 누군가 당신에게 '월급루팡' 같다고 하면, 그 이유를 반드시 물어보고 경고를 주어야 한다.
Therefore, if someone calls you a 'salary thief,' you must ask for the reason and give a warning.
2. 썸 타다 / something going on
"Grace와 Mike를 공원에서 봤어. 아마 두 사람이 썸타고 있는 거 같아"
"I saw Grace and Mike at the park. It looks like they have something going on."
'썸타다'는 한국에서만 쓰이는 독특한 표현이기 때문에, 영어로 완벽하게 일대일 대응되는 단어는 없다. 다만 남녀사이에 정식으로 사귀기 전에 호감을 가지고 조금씩 서로 감정을 내비치는 단계를 말한다고 보면 무리가 없다. 보통 썸을 타다가 연인이 되기도 하고, 그냥 일반적인 친구로 남기도 하기 때문에 남녀사이에 부담없이 서로에 대해 약간의 호감과 가능성을 가지고 알아가는 단계라 보면 된다.
Since 'sseom-tada' is a unique expression used only in Korea, there is no perfect one-to-one equivalent in English. However, it's safe to say that it refers to the stage where a man and a woman express their feelings of attraction to each other little by little before officially dating. Usually, 'sseom' leads to a romantic relationship, but sometimes they remain just friends. Therefore, it can be seen as a stage where a man and a woman get to know each other with a bit of attraction and possibility without any burden.
다만 당신의 동료와 썸을 타고 있다면 다른 직원들이 알지 못하게 하는 편이 좋다. 자칫 관계가 깨져버리면 다른 직원들도 불편함을 느끼기 때문에 눈치 못 채도록 비밀스럽게 썸을 타기를 추천한다.

'법카'는 '법인 카드'의 줄임말로, 회사 또는 법인 명의로 발급된 신용카드나 체크카드를 의미한다. 주로 회사의 업무 관련 비용 지출에 사용되며, 개인적인 용도로 사용하는 것은 엄격히 금지된다.

그런데 적지않은 한국직장인이 법카를 개인용도나 회사일이 아닌 곳에 써서 징계를 많이 받고 있다는 사실을 기억하자. 법인카드를 쓸 때는 어디에 썼는지 반드시 기록해두는 것이 좋다.
However, keep in mind that a significant number of Korean office workers are disciplined for using corporate cards for personal purposes or in places unrelated to company business. It's best to always keep a record of where you used the corporate card.
