올 상반기 고속철도 이용객 수가 5800만명을 돌파한 것으로 나타났다. 국토교통부는 외국인 손님이 1년 전보다 13% 늘어나고 신규 노선 개통, ‘노쇼 방지’ 반환수수료 개편 등이 영향을 미쳤다고 분석했다.

국토부는 올 1~6월 케이티엑스(KTX)·에스알티(SRT) 등 고속열차 이용객 수가 5825만명으로 전년 동기 대비 1.6% 증가했다고 밝혔다. 이 중 외국인 이용객은 284만명으로 1년 전보다 13.4% 늘었다. 전체 이용객 중 4544만명(하루 25만명가량)은 케이티엑스를, 1281만명(하루 7만명가량)은 에스알티를 이용했다.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the number of high-speed train users, including KTX and SRT, reached 58.25 million from January to June this year, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same period last year. Among them, foreign users accounted for 2.84 million, a 13.4% increase from a year ago. 국토부는 지난해 하반기부터 올해 1월까지 개통한 6개 신규노선이 올 상반기 250만명을 수송하는 등 철도 이용객 증가에 기여했다고 밝혔다. 6개 신규노선은 서해선(홍성~서화성), 포승-평택선(홍성~안중~평택~천안~홍성, 순환열차), 중부내륙선(충주~문경), 중앙선(안동~영천), 동해선(포항~삼척), 교외선(의정부~대곡)이다. 동해선(부전~강릉)은 상반기 누적 수송 인원 99만2천명을 기록했고, 중앙선(청량리~부전)은 98만7천명을 수송한 것으로 집계됐다.

‘노쇼’ 방지를 위해 지난해 말부터 반환 수수료 조정에 나선 것도 좌석 수급에 기여한 것으로 분석된다. 앞서 국토부와 한국철도공사(코레일), 에스알(SR)은 승차권 환불 위약금 발생 시기를 앞당기고 주말·공휴일 출발 직전 환불에 대해 위약금을 2배로 올렸는데, 국토부는 지난 5월 한달간 조기반환율(출발 2일 전까지 반환)이 증가하고 잔여 좌석에 대한 재판매가 활성화됐다고 밝혔다. 한편 일반철도(무궁화, ITX-마음 등)의 상반기 수송 인원은 2680만명으로 전년 대비 2.6% 감소한 것으로 집계됐다.
