옛날 제주도 김치고을에서 억울하게 목숨을 잃은 삼형제의 원한을 풀기 위해, 원님은 기지와 배짱이 뛰어난 강림도령에게 저승으로 가서 염라대왕을 잡아오라는 엄명을 내렸습니다.

Long ago in Kimchi Village on Jeju Island, to resolve the grudge of three brothers who lost their lives unjustly, the magistrate issued a strict order to Gangrim Doryeong, known for his extraordinary wit and audacity, to travel to the Underworld and fetch King Yeomra.

강림도령은 슬기로운 아내가 정성껏 준비해 준 시루떡과 지혜로운 안내 덕분에 험난한 저승문과 황천길을 통과하여 무사히 저승에 도착했습니다.

Thanks to the rice cakes and wise advice meticulously prepared by his clever wife, Gangrim Doryeong safely navigated through the perilous gates of the afterlife and the Yellow Springs road.

저승에서 염라대왕의 행차를 막아선 강림도령은 위엄 있고 당당한 태도로 이승의 억울한 죄를 아뢰고, 붉은 밧줄로 염라대왕을 매어 이승으로 소환하는 데 성공했습니다.

Blocking King Yeomra's procession in the Underworld, Gangrim Doryeong presented the unjust crimes of the living realm with dignified boldness and successfully bound King Yeomra with a red cord to summon him to the human realm.

이승에 온 염라대왕은 악인을 처벌하여 원한을 풀어주었고, 강림도령의 범상치 않은 기지와 기개에 탄복하여 그를 저승으로 데려가 영혼을 인도하는 총괄 저승사자(강림차사)로 삼았습니다.

King Yeomra, after coming to the human world, punished the evil-doers to relieve the grudge, and admiring Gangrim's extraordinary courage and quick intellect, appointed him as the Chief Grim Reaper (Gangrim Chasa) to guide departed souls.

"이승의 용맹한 강림은 이제 죽은 자의 영혼이 길을 잃지 않도록 저승으로 안전하게 인도하라."
