아주 먼 옛날, 키가 너무 커서 한라산을 베개 삼고 바닷물에 발을 담그고 누웠던 거대 여신 설문대할망이 있었습니다.

Long ago, there lived a giant goddess named Seolmundae Halmang, who was so tall that she used Mount Halla as her pillow and rested her feet in the deep ocean.

할망은 치마폭에 흙을 가득 담아 날라 바다 한가운데에 우뚝 솟은 아름다운 제주도를 만들었습니다.

The goddess carried vast amounts of earth in her skirt to create the majestic Jeju Island towering in the middle of the sea.

흙을 운반하는 동안 치마 터진 구멍으로 떨어진 흙 알갱이들이 쌓여 제주도 전역의 368개 오름이 되었습니다.

As she moved, small clumps of earth leaked through the holes in her worn skirt, forming 368 volcanic cones (oreums) across Jeju.

설문대할망은 섬 사람들에게 육지까지 이어지는 다리를 놓아줄 테니 속옷을 만들 명주 100벌을 달라고 요청했습니다.

Seolmundae Halmang offered to build a bridge connecting Jeju to the Korean mainland if the islanders made her 100 suits of silk underwear.

"나에게 명주 옷 백 벌을 만들어 준다면, 너희를 위해 육지까지 튼튼한 다리를 놓아주겠다."

"If you make me one hundred suits of silk clothes, I will build a sturdy bridge connecting this island to the mainland for you."

주민들이 온 힘을 다해 모았으나 명주가 모자라 99벌밖에 만들지 못하자, 다리 공사는 중간에 중단되고 말았습니다.

Although the villagers worked tirelessly, silk ran short and they completed only 99 suits. Consequently, the construction of the bridge remained unfinished.
